CMA NYC22 wrap up – Apple awards & words from event heads
By Matt Poust
The 2022 College Media Convention came to an end yesterday, March 13, with the David L. Adam’s Apple Awards capping it off.
The Apple Awards were meant to commemorate student journalists’ hard work and dedication to their university media outlets throughout the past year.
In words from the CMA’s website, “cheer for your co-workers, yourself, and your competition, and let’s give college journalists the recognition they deserve.”
The award ceremony consisted of 19 categories within media fields including print work, social media, graphic design, radio talk, and news coverage. With each category receiving submissions from an abundance of different student media outlets across the country, only three universities were able to grab awards in more than one category(Appalachian State, Tarrant County College, Southern U & A&M College). This goes to show the type of high-level media work being accomplished by students throughout the nation.

WORDS FROM EVENT HEADS ON A SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION
CMA President, Chris Whitley and Head Events Coordinator, Carl Corry were kind enough to share some words on the outcome of this year’s convention.
This being the first in-person event in two years due to covid’s forcing it online, Whitley and Corry were in anxious anticipation for what to expect.
Corry elaborated on this anxiousness, and the convention’s overall success in an interview saying, “This year was beyond our expectations. Given where we were with the coronavirus just a couple of months ago we weren’t really sure how many people were going to show up. With more than 600 people in attendance, we were just really pleased. The speakers were amazing, and people were really engaged and happy to see each other. It’s just been outstanding.”
Corry went on to express his sense that students were even more excited to see each other and experience the in-person event due to the opportunity not being offered the past two years.
“It’s like there was pent-up demand to connect and learn. I chatted it up with a lot of people and they seemed to really be soaking it all up.”
Seeing the massive turn out of media students and advisors from all over the country, it was clear that these individuals were jumping at the chance to gain this experience. CMA President Whitley voiced his thoughts on the convention’s ability to have such a successful outreach.
“It shows that there’s a demand for students and advisors to want to get together and network, and learn from each other. Everyone wants to find kindred spirits, we’re all weird and relatable in our own way, so it’s kind of special to see people all over America doing what you do, right? It energizes you.”
Now back in person and with a hitch-free 2022 convention behind them, the members at CMA hope to keep this event running smoothly and efficiently for the pleasure of college media students for years to come.
